Construction holidays in The Netherlands are here!

The Netherlands is the country, that offers to people holidays during the whole year, just like the other countries. But have you ever heard about construction holidays?

These holidays are divided into north, middle and south and is called the “Bouwvak”. This vacation lasts 3 weeks and employees often take (compulsory) vacation during this period.

Before the year 1981, the construction holidays were the official holidays that all companies had to provide to all workers. Everything has changed after the year 1981 and companies got the option to decide for themselves if they want their employees in the construction field to take their holidays. Currently, there are still plenty of the companies that still use these holidays.

When?

North: from 30 July 2022 to 20 August 2022
Middle: from 23 July 2022 to 13 August 2022
South: from 6 August 2022 to 27 August 2022

What professions are included?

The Bouwvak is a holiday for workers, that are working in the construction field, such as: carpenters, roofers, painters, plumbers, welders etc.

Due to lack of ongoing projects during this period, many workers are coming back home, but there are still options to keep working if you wish. As well many clients do their planning wisely, relocate their employees to different regions to keep them working or plan them to come back right after “Bouwvak” is finished.

What do I do during Bouwvak?

Plan with your employer:

• As you are already aware that construction holidays exist, take an advantage and discuss all options with your employer
• Contact your employer at least one month before Bouwvak starts
• Let your employer know what’s your plan, your preferences and one of the options can be to work in the part of The Netherlands, in which construction holidays just finished (rotating between parts of the Netherlands)

Find short them job: 

• Luckily, there are still some positions, that are not affected by construction holidays, so you can smoothly continue working abroad
• Distribution & logistics and hospitality are the fields, that don’t require to have experiences in those domains and offer good salaries. Which means, you can continually work
